Moses/Jobs

fek:

By the way, what have you done that’s so great? Do you create anything, or just criticize others’ work and belittle their motivations?

- Steve Jobs

‘Those who can, build. Those who can’t, criticize.

- Robert Moses

This is a great comparison.

Moses also shows up in Lawrence Lessig’s Code during a discussion of the concept of how in the computing world, code is essentially architecture — it rigidly defines what we can and can not do.  He points to how The Power Broker documents a bunch of cases where Moses made architectural decisions based on what effects he thought they would have on black people — gates or roads that were too narrow for city buses (since only whites had cars), etc.

The App store, and the control that Apple maintains over the content sold in it, is one of clearest demonstrations of Lessig’s idea currently in existence.
